The clock is ticking for companies to convert to SAP S/4HANA and the number of available SAP consultants is dwindling. So what’s holding companies back from getting started with the inevitable data migration process? Many companies running multiple legacy systems are put off at the mere thought of the “perceived” costs and effort involved in migrating data to SAP S/4HANA. The decision is stalled by several common myths surrounding data migration. Here we explain why – with the right data migration partner – it doesn’t have to be costly and time-consuming, but instead is a game-changer in the transformation of business data.

Myth #1 – Everything Has to Be Migrated From the Legacy Systems – Wrong!

With an SAP S/4HANA conversion, many companies wrongly believe that all data from all legacy systems needs to be migrated. Indeed, a lot of old data is likely to be irrelevant, but for compliance reasons must be retained for a certain period of time. This doesn’t mean that all the legacy data has to be migrated, however. In fact, SAP S/4HANA performs better with a smaller data footprint, so there’s a clear case for establishing a “clean” database from the very outset, with companies creating a solid foundation for their new system environment. With JiVS IMP, outdated legacy systems are decommissioned, historical data is separated from operational data and stored on a separate platform, yet it remains accessible to the user in the S/4HANA environment as and when it’s needed.

Myth #2 – Data Migration Is Expensive – Wrong!

Data migration doesn’t have to cost the Earth if managed intelligently. With the “selective” separation of historical from operational data, legacy systems can be retired, so the customer is no longer faced with high ongoing maintenance costs. They also benefit from a leaner system environment as JiVS IMP reduces the volume of operational data by up to 80%, with only part of the legacy data being transformed and migrated. In turn, this means less computing capacity is needed in SAP S/4HANA, and companies can save up to 80% in operating costs compared to running their legacy systems. By keeping the new system lean through continuous rightsizing and data separation, this can mean a saving of 25% or more over the entire lifecycle of the new system environment. These numbers speak for themselves and are reassuring from both a short-term and a long-term perspective.

Myth #3 – It Takes Months to Migrate the Data– Wrong!

The more legacy systems a company has, the longer the data transformation and migration will take. But with JiVS IMP, automation technologies are leveraged to make this process much faster than traditional approaches for reducing data volume. Through automation, data can be transferred at the click of a button. Transferring ADK data to JiVS IMP via the turbo loader tool takes anything from a few days to a maximum of several weeks, even for a compressed volume of 100TB. In the past this could have taken several months. What’s more, 20TB of existing SAP data can be transferred from legacy systems to JiVS IMP in just one day.

Now that we’ve cleared up some of the common data migration myths regarding volume, costs, and speed, we hope this has eased some concerns that may have been holding you back from taking the next step towards SAP S/4HANA conversion. Over 2,000 companies are already reaping the benefits of faster and simplified data migration combined with lower operating costs, with JiVS IMP taking a lot of pain out of the process.
